2b-Rear Fender-221-Rear Stand
The rear stand is made of steel with a rectangular cross section and rounded edges. At some places the outer “wall” is removed, so that the rectangular cross section turns into a U shape which is thinner by an amount equal to the thickness of the profile. The stand has the shape of a U; at the end of each leg a flat steel section is riveted onto it for shaping the hinge. The stand is hinged around two studs, screwed into 101 Side Rail, LH and 102 Side Rail, RH. A reinforcement strip has been riveted onto the U shape. When folded back the stand is retained by a clip, fitted on the rear mud guard. The earliest rear stands did not have the sections with the rectangular shaped cross section, but have a U-shaped cross section along the entire length. This leads to the stand to bend when in use, so that the rear tyre was blocked against the part of the stand, resting on the floor. One measured non-reinforced Rear Stand was 8 mm shorter than the reinforced one. Although the extend to which the horizontal section has been bent (7/16” on the drawing) is more important than the length, this shorter length may also be the reason why the rear tyre is blocked by the older type of Rear Stand. The rear stand was presumably reinforced in 1921. |
