1-Frame-151-Stand,
Front
A replica of
151-Stand, Front was made by using pictures taken from an original Stand.
All photographs in this series are taken from the replica I made. The only
exception are the photographs marked “Original”; these were taken from a newly
sprayed, original Front Stand.
Determination of the dimensions was done by scaling, using the ruler which was
photographed with it. Small adaptations were made to fit the stand correctly as
described below. This replica is probably not exactly identical to the original
one. The cut out section to allow operating the foot brake could probably be
prevented by making the stand a bit narrower.
Most Model A’s
have lost their front stand in the course of time, because it’s hanging quite
low and can easily be damaged. And because you don’t actually need one, it was
often removed and thrown away.
The front stand
is made of steel profile with a U shaped cross section. It is bent in the shape
of (another) U; at the end of each leg, a flat steel part is welded onto it,
serving as the hinge. A reinforcement strip has been riveted onto the U shape.
The stand is at the bottom wider than at the top; the bottom part has to be wide
enough to have the bike stand firmly and when folding back or forth, to swing
clear from the muffler stud, which is bolted to the same brackets that form the
hinges. At the top it has to be as narrow as the distance between the outsides
of the two brackets. This makes the shape of the front stand more complicated
than that of the rear stand. When folded back or forth it swings closely along
the muffler stud, the foot brake lever and the right hand side of the engine’s
bottom cover (the ‘pan’). This cover sticks more out at the right hand side than
at the left hand side, because the flange for attaching it to the longitudinal
members is pointing outward at the left side and inward at the right side,
making the right side wider than the left side.
When folded back
the stand is retained by a clip fitted on the bottom cover plate.
It is unclear what
161-Brace-Front Stand is.
