Front wheel

The front wheel has 19” x 3½” tyres, a 19” x 3” Dunlop rim, a 50 mm hub and a 150 mm brake drum, riveted to the left side. The brake drum is 33 mm wide.
It is fitted with ten 197 mm x 3.65 mm spokes and 30 spokes of 202 mm x 3.65 mm, together with 40 x 7.6mm nipples.

The wheel bearings are two 20 x 47 x 14 mm “SKF” ball bearings No 6204.

Front brake

The front brake consists of a bottom and a top brake shoe, pushed against the brake drum by a central eccentric cam.  The hand brake operates the eccentric cam around a central bush on the anchor plate, by means of an internal lever.
The material thickness of the central bush appeared to be too thin in early models, leading to an increase of the diameter of the bush from 26 mm to 27.5 mm, starting with No 1526.  The hole in the eccentric cam changed accordingly.

Speedometer drive

The speedometer drive consists of a simple crown and pinion wheel, with a reduction ratio of W = 1.5.
Initially, the housing of the speedometer drive and the bushes for the pinion wheel and cable had no means of lubrication, a grease nipple was added later to the drive housing.

The crown wheel of the speedometer drive has a left-handed thread and holds the wheel bearing.
The 1934 crown wheel is identified from the recess in the flange of this crown wheel.

Front wheel with mud flap.

The front wheel bearing is poorly protected against water and dirt on the right hand side, leading to the ball bearings seizing, resulting in the bearing disintegrating causing severe wear and damage to the bearing housing.

Slight wear can be solved with “Loctite” when fitting a new bearing.  Nowadays a bearing with a plastic seal must be used.
